It's not too late to be planning for your Arizona tax credits for the 2016 filing season!
The Public School Credit still stands at $200/$400 for single/married filers. Effective with last year's filing season, however, is the timing! Beginning in 2016, contributions made to a public school from January 1 to April 15 of a calendar year may used as a credit on the prior year's return...or you can fund the credit for your 2017 taxes anytime this year. The Private School Tuition Credit has been increased for 2016 to $1,087 for single filers and $2,173 for married filing joint returns. This can be paid by year end, or up to April 15, 2017 to still qualify for a 2016 credit.
Also, be sure to ask us about the expanded Qualifying Charitable Organization credit. Effective with the 2016 filing season, this credit has been enlarged to up to $400 for a single filer and $800 for married filing jointly. New this year, the qualifying foster care charitable organization credit is its own separate credit, giving the potential for up to $500 for single filers and $1000 for married filing jointly. Both the lists for foster care and the qualifying charitable organizations are growing so there are lots of great possibilities to choose from. You can find lists on the Arizona Department of Revenue website, or just let us know and we'll email them to you.
The Arizona Military Family Relief Fund is closed for 2016 but it will be available during 2017 for next year's taxes. It qualifies for a $200/$400 credit as well but this fund closes each year once it hits the million dollar mark in donations, and that's typically in mid-December.
Give us a call if you have any questions about any of the Arizona tax credits!
